Traveling from Madrid to Seville by Renfe AVE takes around 2 hours and 40 minutes on our service. Here is our firsthand account of boarding at Madrid Atocha, security checks, when the platform was announced, luggage storage, and what first class was really like.
Madrid Atocha: Arriving One Hour Before Departure

We had brunch at a café near Madrid Atocha and walked to the station around noon for our 1:00 p.m. train. Because we knew there would be luggage screening, we preferred having extra time rather than rushing. At first, we could not find our train information on the level where we entered. We went upstairs, where a queue and departure displays led us toward the high-speed train security area.
Security Screening at Madrid Atocha

Before entering the departure waiting area, we placed our bags and outerwear through an X-ray scanner and passed through the checkpoint. It was straightforward on our visit, and we were through by about 12:15 p.m. However, queues can vary, so I would not plan to arrive at the last minute.
Waiting for the Platform Announcement

After security, there were cafés and shops where passengers could buy drinks, sandwiches, or pastries. We had already eaten, but these would have been convenient alternatives. Our platform appeared on the departure board at around 12:35 p.m., approximately 25 minutes before departure. Check the display for your own train number and platform rather than assuming it will always use the same one.

Boarding the Renfe AVE

Once our platform was announced, we headed down to the waiting train and found Coach 2. I recommend moving promptly if you are carrying a large suitcase: the luggage racks can fill up surprisingly quickly.
Luggage Storage: The Most Important Tip

The large luggage racks near the ends of the coach were shared and not individually assigned. We managed to find space, but passengers who boarded later struggled to fit their suitcases. If one end is full, check the other end of the coach. A small carry-on may fit on an overhead rack, but larger cases are much easier to manage in the designated luggage area. Follow the current operator’s baggage rules for your specific ticket.
Our First-Class Seats: Coach 2, 03A and 04A

We booked a Choice-Comfort first-class option through Omio and selected seats 03A and 04A. They faced each other across a table, which was ideal for traveling together. There was room to put small items on the table, and we found the seats comfortable for the two-hour-and-39-minute journey. Our total payment for two passengers was KRW 163,255 at the time of booking, including extras and a discount; fares will vary.
Power Outlets and Wi-Fi: Bring a Backup

There was a power outlet near our seats and PlayRenfe Wi-Fi information on the table, but neither worked reliably for us. We were glad to have a power bank. I recommend downloading films, shows, maps, and tickets before departure instead of relying on onboard connectivity. There was also a small hook for a jacket or bag.

The Ride from Madrid to Seville

Our scheduled journey was from Madrid Atocha at 1:00 p.m. to Sevilla Santa Justa at 3:39 p.m. on September 12, 2026, aboard AVE 02130. The scenery along the way was pleasant but not particularly dramatic, so we mostly relaxed. The spacious seating made the journey feel easy.
Arriving at Sevilla Santa Justa

We arrived at Sevilla Santa Justa, collected our luggage, and followed the signs into the station. Inside, there were places to get something to eat or drink. Taking the train between these two cities felt convenient because we avoided a separate airport transfer and lengthy airport procedures.
