I visited La Boqueria Market in Barcelona hoping to try carabinero shrimp. Along the way, I found seafood counters, jamón, colourful sweets and delicious fruit—and enjoyed a freshly grilled seafood lunch.

Visiting La Boqueria Market
La Boqueria is on La Rambla at La Rambla 91, Barcelona. The market’s official website lists opening hours as Monday to Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Individual stalls and holiday hours may differ.
Barcelona’s markets are neighbourhood places to shop for fresh food and meet people. La Boqueria is also a lively stop for visitors who want to browse different stalls and choose something to eat.

Grilled seafood at Quiosc Modern

After exploring, we stopped at Quiosc Modern for grilled scallops, prawns and salmon, with green wine and beer. The seafood was grilled after we ordered. The preparation was simple rather than unusual, but the seafood tasted fresh and we enjoyed it.

I cannot confirm whether the grilled prawns were carabineros. The salmon came with potatoes, and sitting at the market counter made the meal part of the experience.

Fruit and raw carabinero shrimp
After lunch we bought watermelon and figs. The fruit I tried at markets during my trip was sweet and delicious, so I would recommend picking up some fruit while browsing.

Finally, I found the carabinero shrimp I had come to try. The stall labelled it for raw consumption, and I tried a portion served raw. It was expensive, but I thought it was delicious and worth trying once.

Is La Boqueria worth visiting?
For me, the appeal was being able to explore the market, sit down for seafood and pick up fruit and a special bite from different stalls. It was a fun way to spend time in Barcelona and discover a variety of foods.
